| A Note on Trump’s Federal Federal Funding Freeze Strikes at the Heart of Working America
Trump’s agenda is not to grow the economy and uplift working Americans: it’s to give massive tax cuts to the ultra wealthy and mega corporations, while pulling the rug out from under the majority of Americans’ lives and well-being.
The act of freezing federal spending is an attack on the social contract of this nation and the constitutional checks and balances that underpin our democracy. A federal court has halted the freeze for now, while 22 Attorneys General and hundreds of impacted organizations challenge the action as unconstitutional.
Vermont Democrats condemn Trump’s far-reaching freeze of federal funding today. Even a temporary halt in federally funded programs would result in catastrophic layoffs and delays in service.
Trump has ordered a freeze of essentially all federal funding for critical initiatives under the guise of rooting out programs that “advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and Green New Deal social engineering policies”
These are bedrock programs that most Americans support and rely on – everything from small business grants, climate action, basic health care, student mental health support, and school meals. This jeopardizes SNAP, WIC, Meals on Wheels, HUD’s community development block grants, and more.
Trump’s freeze could have a devastating effect on hardworking Americans across the country by jeopardizing teachers’ pay, support for first responders, lifesaving medical research, critical mental health services, and housing for homeless veterans.

As our federal delegation has said: “This decision by the Trump Administration will cause immense pain for the most vulnerable people in Vermont and across our country. It represents a dangerous move toward authoritarianism…Trump is endangering the health and wellbeing of Vermonters. We will do everything in our power to see that it is reversed.”
As our State Treasurer has said: “Our office has been in touch with state treasurers across the country to assess the impact of this federal action and how best to respond. We will also continue to consult with our Federal Transition Task Force & state leaders to ensure Vermonters are protected from this action.”
As Senate Majority Leader Kesha Ram Hinsdale has said: “The chaos, confusion, and cruelty is the point. Creating widespread fear and panic is a tool to divide us, and we cannot let that happen. There is no freedom without unity, and Vermonters need to stand together now more than ever in the face of unprecedented and unconstitutional overreach. |
